As promised, I am sharing the pattern for this beautiful crocheted double-sided shell blanket today!
In case you missed the story behind this blanket and why it is so important to me, head on over to my post: A Crocheted Christmas Story.
This pattern is very time consuming, since it is double-sided, but I promise it is so worth it when it is done! The original pattern is for a baby blanket, but I used a bigger hook to make it work as a normal sized blanket. The pattern I am sharing makes a large blanket of over 5 feet wide and 5 feet long.
To make the pattern smaller or larger, you can add or subtract in multiples of 5 chains.
CROCHETED DOUBLE-SIDED SHELL BLANKET PATTERN
SUPPLIES:
6 SKEINS OF CARON ONE POUND YARN (3 SKEINS OF EACH COLOR)
SIZE K HOOK

WORK IN 1 DC IN 5TH CH FROM HOOK (TURNING CH), 3 DC IN NEXT CH, 1 DC IN NEXT CH (1 SHELL COMPLETED) *SKIP 2 CH, WORK 1 DC IN NEXT CH, 3 DC IN NEXT CH, 1 DC IN NEXT CH. REPEAT FROM * ACROSS TO WITHIN 1 CH FROM END. DO NOT WORK IN LAST CH. DROP LOOP FROM HOOK.
ROW 2 (CHAIN-LOOP ROW) DO NOT TURN. WITH COLOR B, MAKE A LOOP ON HOOK.
STARTING AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LAST ROW, JOIN B WITH A SC IN THE 4TH CH OF TURNING CH (THE CH BEFORE FIRST DC OF FIRST SHELL-SC ROW). WORKING IN FRONT OF THE LAST ROW, *CH 6 SKIP NEXT SHELL, WORK 1 SC IN FIRST CH OF THE 2ND SKIPPED CH IN FOUNDATION CH (BETWEEN SHELLS) REPEAT FROM * ACROSS, ENDING WITH CH 6, 1 SC IN END CH (THE FREE CH AT END OF LAST SHELL-ST ROW).
ROW 3 (SHELL-ROW) WITH B, CH 2, TURN, WORK A SLIP-ST IN FIRST DC OF LAST SHELL-ST ROW, CH 2 *INSERTING HOOK THROUGH THE DC AND UNDER CHAIN-LOOP, WORK A SHELL (5 DC IN SAME ST) IN CENTER OF NEXT SHELL, REPEAT FROM *ACROSS ROW, DROP LOOP FROM HOOK. DO NOT TURN.
ROW 4 (CHAIN-LOOP ROW) PICK UP DROPPED A LOOP AT END OF THE SHELL-ST ROW BEFORE LAST. *CH 6, WORKING IN FRONT OF LAST SHELL-ST ROW, SKIP SHELL, WORK I SC IN SPACE BEFORE NEXT SHELL (SAME COLOR SHELL AS CHAIN-LOOP BEING MADE), REPEAT FROM * ACROSS, END WITH CH 6, SKIP LAST SHELL, 1 SC UNDER CHAIN-LOOP AT END OF ROW.
ROW 5 WITH A INSTEAD OF B, WORK SAME AS FOR ROW 3, DO NOT TURN.
ROW 6 PICK-UP DROPPED B LOOP AT END OF THE SHELL-ST ROW BEFORE LAST AND WORK SAME AS FOR ROW 4.
REPEAT ROWS 3,4,5,6 FOR PATTERN AND WORK UNTIL BLANKET MEASURES DESIRED LENGTH.
LAST ROW: SC IN EACH DC IN ALL SHELLS TO FINISH BLANKET.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD FRINGE:
CUT 5 1/2" LENGTHS OF BOTH COLORS USING TO STRANDS OF EACH COLOR FRINGE. ATTACH FRINGE BETWEEN SHELLS ON STARTING EDGE. WHEN ATTACHING FRINGE ON LAST ROWS FINISHED, CATCH LOOSE LOOP IN BETWEEN SHELLS.
I made this blanket for my sister for Christmas, and she has informed me she carries it with her everywhere she goes in the house. I am so glad she likes it as much (if not more) than I do!
As for me, I still can't decide which side I like better! And now that my big crochet project is complete, I hardly know what to do with myself. I am already itching to make another!
If you decide to make this blanket, or a variation of it, send me a picture, I'd love to see the finished product!
One more day of winter break and then it's back to the books for me.
Happy Monday!
What a beautiful blanket! I wish I could crochet!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty amazed at these mad crochet skills, Melanie! It looks so cute with the two-tones on your bed. Bravo!

Thanks for sharing! I love the way your blanket turned out! The pattern and the colors your chose are perfect. I've never done a double sided blanket like this, but I think I'm going to have to try it.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I have not tried to do a project as large as a blanket yet, still working on knitting scarves and hats. Love the two-tones and the pattern!
ReplyDeleteThanks Renee! I totally know the feeling. A blanket is a huge commitment... one I usually get bored of before finishing :)
DeleteThis is a stunning blanket you have created. And, it's so so big. It's really quite a unique stitch that you have used. I'm sure it will be cherished for many years to come.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing it at our link party... featuring you on Thursday! Hope to see you back :)

ReplyDeleteWhat are the dimensions approximately of your finished blanket?
ReplyDeleteLove your pattern but you didnt say what thickness of yarn - dk? or 4 ply?? I suppose it could be either but then the size will differ - so if I wanted it at least 5 x 5 I need to decide on the hook size. Please advise if you get this message. Thanks Lydia
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely going to steal lots of yarn from my Mother and make my own blanket. I love the pattern.
ReplyDeleteYeah! She has a store full of whatever colours I decide to pick.
Will send pic when done.
I have an issue on row 4. I am picking up the loop at the end of the row and unsure of the instructions. Since I am at the end of the row do I chain and turn to start the pattern? Please help anyone
ReplyDeleteI need help on starting the second row. I’ve looked for videos but can’t find any with this pattern. Help please

Melanie, I have been making this blanket for many years. It was taught to me by my husband's Yiayia (grandmother). I just want you to know that she also taught me how to do an edging that really sets it off beautiful. It is knit though. What you have to know though is that the old europeans did not know patterns, they just know how to do things. If you wish more information please email me and maybe we can work something up. Laurie
ReplyDeleteThank you SO MUCH for this!! At the age of 37, I shamefully admit that I still sleep with my baby blanket that was given to me by a great aunt when I was born. Of course as the years went on, it started falling apart more and more, and the once white and yellow blanket turned to yellow and brown 😖..
ReplyDeleteI began to inquire on the pattern/technique 15ish years ago, to no avail. My aunt didn’t know what the pattern was, all she could remember was that it was rare and difficult. I never really thought too much more into it, and kind of gave up hope.
Recently, my mom just started taking up crocheting, and told me she was starting a new blanket for me!! Initially, i was SO EXCITED, but that was quickly diminished when I was faced with the hard truth- we don’t know what Blankie identifies as... (sidenote- my phone auto corrects “blankie” to a capital B- maybe now you realize that even my phone knows THE Blankie...).
I, abruptly halted the process by, in a joking manner, (but I was actually serious 🤣) quickly exclaimed- “STOPPPP!!... if it’s not EXACT, I want no part of it!!!!”
I began to frantically search Google up and down, heart racing and sweat dripping down my face (🤣😜), then had the thought to do a reverse image search with a picture of my current blanket..... Very quickly after that, eureka!
I finally found what the pattern was called, along with YouTube videos, Pinterest posts, pattern printouts, and then your post here (which was more than helpful). Trust me when I say, I sent my mom near 20 links...
To say I’m excited is an understatement, and cannot wait for my NEW Blankie that’ll be pastel rainbow one side, and white on the other!.
Old Blankie may or may not be lurking very close by in the shadows, however; Only time will tell......
Anyways, point being- I appreciate this post, and the time and dedication I’m sure it took to create it... and I appreciate you! Thank you for being a kind human.
Sincerely,
Blankie obsessed weird chick pushing 40 (Kelly 😜)

My grandmother made us four kids baby blankets like this (with baby yarn of course). My sister and I are carrying on the tradition and giving this style to family & friends who have babies. Everybody loves them! We put tassels on the corners instead of fringe. I'm glad to have this pattern to help us!
