DIY Outdoor Pallet Bar

Warmer weather is upon us, and I am loving spending my weekends and evenings outdoors. We love to entertain in our backyard on warm summer days. This year, we decided we needed a space to place food and beverages while we are outside, so we decided to make a bar.

Adam gets free pallets from work, so we chose to make our bar out of wood pallets. We spray painted two pallets, screwed the together, and added a scrap piece of wood to the top. I decided to paint the top with chalk paint to write fun thing or to label specialty drinks.

It was a pretty simple project, but I love the final result!

Are you working on outdoor projects for summer?
We are definitely looking forward to a few outdoor updates and many days full of BBQ's and corn-hole tournaments.

Scenes from the Weekend

Well, I decided it's about time to this little blog of mine. Last week was my first week of my fieldwork placement, and I am not kidding when I say I have never been so exhausted in my life. Every day last week, I would get home around 6 and I was passed out on the couch by 8:30. Needless to say, blogging just wasn't in the cards for me, and I was beyond excited for the weekend!
Friday night, a local Tap Room had a Ciders, Meads, and Sour Ales Event. It was great to have an entire selection of beverages I would enjoy, as opposed to the usual 2-4 options.

Saturday, I got up bright and early and head to Detroit's Eastern Market with my parents. I always love taking a couple trips there each Spring/Summer, so I was pretty excited to go. We got some great deals and ended up filling most of the truck bed with flowers. I ended up buying most of my flowers and vegetable plants, but I am forcing myself to wait until after Memorial Day to plant them all.

Saturday night, we headed to the World Expo of Beers in Frankenmuth to meet up with some friends. We tried some great beers and had a great time.

Sunday was a much needed day at home, relaxing, doing laundry, and getting some things organized for the week. I was able to get some of my outdoor decorations out and even redecorate my living room!

Happy Monday, have a great week!

DIY Diaper Cake

It's hard to believe that up until last week, I had never made a diaper cake.
A coworker is having her second baby (due today!) and we decided to get her a little something for her new addition. I volunteered to make a diaper cake because I always thought it would be fun, and the process didn't prove me wrong.

I made a small, two-tiered cake. I used a total of 26 diapers, 7 diapers for the first tier and 19 diapers for the second tier.

Here's what to do:

First, roll each diaper and wrap a rubber band around it.

Next, use rubber bands to form each circled tier.
(Again, use 7 diapers for the first tier and 19 for the second tier)

Then, to connect the two tiers, place an empty toilet paper roll around the center diaper in the bottom tier,

Lastly, slide the center diaper from the top tier onto it as well.

You can repeat these steps with larger tiers to make even bigger diaper cakes.
Since mine was small, I did not use a base to keep it all together, but I probably would have used cardboard on the bottom if I had made the diaper cake any bigger.

Once you have the diaper cake form you desire, all that's left to do is decorate!

HINT: When buying diapers, try to find some that are plain white on either side for a prettier looking cake. I had two different brands of diapers and ended up having to "hide" the designed ones in the center and back of the cake. Oops :)

Have you made a diaper cake before?
Did you use the same strategy or did you do something completely different?

Happy Friday!

CURRENTLY #3

It's the first Wednesday of the month, and I'm linking up with In Residence and Gold & Bloom for another CURRENTLY post.

These next few weeks I am trying to seriously embrace change. I have been an OT student for 2 years and have worked at my current job for nearly 4 years. In the matter of a week and a half, I am finishing school, quitting my job, and saying goodbye to my classmates and coworkers all at once. I am starting on my next adventure as an occupational therapy intern in an outpatient rehab clinic. To say I'm nervous is an understatement, but I'm also pretty darn excited.

Here is what else I've been up to lately...

Designing: Budget printables for my new budget binder. I start fieldwork next week which means I will no longer have an income. No second income = one strict budget for us.

Enjoying: This beautiful weather and the great outdoors! I love hearing the birds chirping and sleeping with the windows open :)

Ordering: My Occupational Therapy Quick Reference Dictionary.

Celebrating: The end of the school year and finishing the last of my classes for my masters program! I have 6+ months of fieldwork ahead of me and then I'll be graduating!

Tasting: Vodka and sparkling water, my new favorite cocktail. Low cal, low cost, and so many flavors to choose from!

What are you currently up to?

We had quite the eventful weekend full of BBQs, bonfires, and an earthquake!
The weather in Michigan has been absolutely amazing! We skipped Sprign and went right in to summer, which I am perfectly okay with :)
